To region 3 DVD
Which means, a nice region 0 will be out shortly after that.
It’s been some what quiet on the Japanese front when it comes to daikaiju. Since Toho retired Godzilla back in 2004, we’ve had one Gamera film that kinda fizzled (but was fairly good) and a few some what spoof movies. Monster X Strikes Back and Big Man Japan to name a few. Seems one man is trying to keep the genre alive by himself though.
Shinpei Hayashiya. who started his film making career with 2 notable fan films, Godzilla X Desugirasu, and Gamera 4: The Truth. After gaining some notoriety from these films, he broke out with this own original daikiju opus, Deep Sea Monster Reigo. That film pitted a WW2 Japanese battleship Yamato against a giant finned monster named Reigo. The film proved to be successful enough that we now have his follow up, Raiga The Deep Sea Monster.
It has been over six decades since the battle of Deep Sea Monster Reigo and Battleship Yamato. As global warming worsens, throwing the ecosystem off balance, a disaster approaches Japan. A mysterious, massive creature emerges from the nearby ocean and a fishing boat encounters an ominous deep-sea creature in Tokyo Bay. Then a giant monster “Raiga” lands in Asakusa, Tokyo! The Taito Guard is called out at the request of the government, and a cut-throat battle beyond all imagination begins…

A true work of love for the daikaiju genre. Now, it’s coming to DVD for those with region free DVD players. Or, if you’re patient, and neither Tokyo Shock or Magnet pick this little gem up, a nifty little region 0 DVD is sure to creep it’s way on to the market. But if you’re going legit, Godzilla2012 has a breakdown of the DVD:

G is an indie movie that was made by by a special efefcts filmmaker who has worked on studio pictures. This was his own project and he raised the money to make it himself. The acting is by non-professionals and is pretty poor. The fx are hit and miss, but I admire the variety of different techniques used and some of the shots are imaginative and excellent.G also has several intentionally funny moments. The robot design is supposed to be humorous. Hmmmn?? Makes me wonder if this is that small new kaiju film that Norman England mentioned that Kiyotaka Taguchi was working on in an interview with Kensforce’ some time back????
