Yuji Shimomura is perplexing to me. On the one hand, he was the action director for Versus. A movie I dearly, dearly love. The fights in that film were superb bits of fantastic that blew my mind when I first viewed them..in that lovely fall of 2000. Then again, the whole film was crafted under the guiding hand of Ryuhei Kitamura. On the other hand, Shimomura has gone on to direct his own film, Death Trance, which is pretty much Versus in a weird post apocalyptic days of future’s past. Even with Tak Sakaguchi, Death Trance offered some fun times, but lacked the thrill of Versus.
Now, we come to Alien vs Ninja. Shimomura is co directing this with Seiji Chiba, who is familiar with the Ninja affair. Though most of Shimomura’s marks are still here though. Forests, off the wall fight antics, low budgets, but it’s all in spirit of the film. Don’t think I’m ragging on this. It looks fun. Great though? I’m reserving judgment till viewing.
