On this day, April 27th, 1956 (only 6 weeks before my dad was born) America bore witness to what would become a world wide icon. Godzilla. It was on this day 54 years ago that the re-vamped Gojira, with additions of tv actor, the great, late, gay, Raymond Burr, stomped onto the drive ins across this fair country.
The film would go on to be a major success here in the states, and was the start of what would soon be many sequels to follow.
Godzilla King of the Monsters today, like it’s Japanese version, can be considered a classic. While the American distributors reshoot a good portion of the film with an English speaking Japanese actor and Raymond Burr acting as the American eyes to Godzilla’s attack on Tokyo, they still manage to keep the emotion and sentimentality in the film. Gojira could have easily been chopped up for all of it’s FX footage and repackaged, or the producers could have gone out of their way to goof on the Japanese, but they didn’t Instead, they made a very unique film. In watching both Gojira and Godzilla King of the Monsters, you’re seeing the same film but from two completely different perspectives. It’s a fascinating bit of cinema.
So today, even though it’s only it’s 54th anniversery, I salute you Godzilla.
