The Rum Diary seems to have taken forever to get here. I believe as far back as 2006, a year after the death of Hunter S Thompson, that Johnny Depp talked about doing this film. Having read the book, I can see why. It’s Thompsons only “fictional” work, but it’s still semi biographical. Playing Thompson at a younger, less drug fueled age in a far more linear story is quite appetising.

This film feels.. Perfect. Rum Diary was a very particular story. While the ending to the book left a bit to be desired, the story of a reporter in a sinking ship of a newspaper in a god forsaken land, in Thompson‘s words are enthralling. I’m hoping against hope that this film dose well enough that Depp dose a few more adaptations of the good doctors work before he’s to old.
The Rum Diary opens October 28th
