It’s not Del Toro, but it’s just as good.

Ever since Legendary Pictures announced that they were doing a new American Godzilla film, I did a double back flip. For a fat guy, that’s a miracle. I’ve been big supporters of Legendary, as they’ve manage to crank out high quality genre films that don’t suck and are given control by the their filmmakers. That news broke back in March. Nearly a year ago. At Comic Con, Legendary handed out some T Shirts with their initial Godzilla design on it, and it was very, very awesome. In November, rumors swirled that Guillermo Del Toro was possibly attached to direct from a script originally called Pacific Rim. That was shot down real quick. Since then, I had theories abound. Today, those theories were put to rest, and none of my picks were named. Instead, Legendary proved why they’re so much better at thinking than I am.
According to the Heat Vision Blog, Legendary has hired Monsters director Gareth Edwards to direct and co write Godzilla. If you haven’t seen Monsters, it’s still available on On Demand or through Xbox Arcade or the Playstation Store. Monsters is the tale of two people trying to get out of Mexico before the new migration season of an Alien species moves through and prevents them from getting back home. That film was made for less than $500,000 dollars, with all of the special effects done by Gareth himself on his home computer. It’s a very character driven story and is exceptionally well made, and damn entertaining. Gareth has been called the next Neil Blomkamp, and hopefully, with Godzilla under his legie, his background as a special effects artist, and just a damn good storyteller, he’ll bring about a Godzilla the likes the world has yet to see.
As you can tell, I’m as giddy as a schoolgirl over this news. I was downtrodden when Del Toro denied his involvement, but this, this is just as good. Legendary already has a decent idea of what they want out of a Godzilla film, and I’m confidant that Edwards can deliver.
