I don’t know how these slipped past me. I must be getting slow in my old age. I’m obsessed with the works of the last Hunter S Thompson. The man was possibly the greatest unique voice of the 20th century. On top of that, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is my favorite film. Period. So when Johnny Depp announced after Thompson’s death that he’ll be playing a young Thompson (aka Paul Kemp) in an adaptation of one of Hunter’s earliest works, The Rum Diary, well, ecstatic doesn’t begin to describe my mood.
FilmTotal.com got a hold of the first images of Depp as Thompson as Kemp. After Scott Pilgrim, this is the film I’m looking forward to the most.
The film is being directed by Bruce Robinson, and along side Depp, stars Giovanni Ribisi, Aaron Eckhart, and Richard Jenkins.
If you haven’t read the book, much like Fear and Loathing, it’s a take on Hunter’s early days of journalism in Puerto Rico during the 50’s. Not the drug addled tales like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but a damn interesting book none the less.
